Transition Committee accepts Landmark offer of protection from frigid weather
Ceremony will also include swearing in of Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens
Syracuse, NY (Jan. 3, 2018) – The Landmark Theatre will provide protection from frigid temperatures forecast Saturday for the inauguration ceremony of Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh. The Walsh Transition Team announced Wednesday it had accepted an offer from the downtown Syracuse theatre to host the swearing in as scheduled at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6 when the mercury is predicted to be hovering at or below 0.
“Our plan was to embrace and celebrate our winter weather by welcoming our community to witness this historic event on the steps of City Hall, but as the forecast temperatures continue to plummet, we have to put safety first,” said Jennifer Owens, co-chair of the Transition Team’s Inauguration Planning Committee. “With this generous offer from the Landmark, which is a true cultural gem of our city, we can bring the ceremonies in out of the cold. We hope that more of our city’s residents will attend if they can be warm and comfortable.”
Mayor Walsh to swear in Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens
The Committee also announced Wednesday that the inauguration ceremony will include the swearing in of Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens. Mayor Walsh will administer Owens’ oath of office after he takes his own, which will be given by Syracuse City Court Judge Derrek Thomas. Mayor Walsh will then deliver inaugural remarks. Common Council President Helen Hudson will serve as master of ceremonies.
Following the swearing in ceremony, the Landmark Theatre stage will play host to performances by a number of local youth dance and cultural organizations. Attendees can also enjoy coffee, hot chocolate and a variety of sweet treats from local restaurants. Guided tours of Syracuse City Hall, which were planned when the event was to occur at the Washington Street building, will be rescheduled for a date in the future.
